Persevere

WEEK 1 JULY 2012

It’s that magical Wimbledon time of year again. I was lucky enough to be on centre court the other day to see Rosol beat Nadal. Rosol had lost first round of qualifying in the last five years at Wimbledon and this year he was up against Nadal who had made the final the last five years running and also been a finalist in the previous four Grand Slams and just 17 days earlier had won the French Open. It was regarded as one of the biggest upsets in the 135 year history of the game. It was the most amazing display of tennis I have seen in a long time and  I have seen my share of great matches over the years! Although he did not win again in the next match, it is a timely reminder to persevere and never give up in order to achieve your greatest victories. 

I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature.

If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence. Determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying. “Here comes number seventy-one!”
