Shingo Kuneida

WEEK 1 – JUNE 2008

Greetings this week come to you from the French Open. Today is a very special day for one of my athletes who is to be crowned World Champion tonight at the ITF World Champions Dinner here in Paris, so today’s quotes are dedicated to him. Shingo Kuneida was diagnosed with a spinal tumour at the age of 8 and was paralysed after surgery. He loved playing basketball and soccer as a teenager and tennis only took over quite a bit later. Last year, he became the first male paralympian to win the Grand Slam – all four majors in one calendar year, something not even his fellow winner tonight, Roger Federer has won. I remember clearly about three years ago him asking me if he ever thought it possible he could become number one. At the time, he was about 10 in the world. I answered, ‘of course you can’, and we immediately reviewed all he was doing and set clear, detailed, daily plans and time lines. I even nicknamed him ‘Number One’ from that day on. The rest is history. Congratulations to Shingo on his fine achievement thus far and on behalf of all my readers Shingo, we hope this year you can make it the Golden Slam.

You too can achieve whatever it is you would love to do. Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen and have an amazing week.
