Beyond your Comfort Zone

MARCH, 2018

I am sure you have heard that greatness begins beyond your comfort zone. When was the last time you did something for the first time? Here are ten strategies and quotes to inspire you to get comfortable being uncomfortable, because that is where you get your greatest growth and the real magic happens.

1          We are all capable of much greater than we realize

To dream anything that you want to dream; that’s the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do; that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits; that is the courage to succeed.
Bernard Edmonds

2          You have to beat your toughest opponent

Being your best is not so much about overcoming the barriers other people place in front of you as it is about overcoming the barriers we place in front of ourselves. It has nothing to do with how many times you win or lose. It has no relation to where you finish in a race or whether you break world records. But it does have everything to do with having the vision to dream, the courage to recover from adversity and the determination never to be shifted from your goals.
Kieren Perkins, Two-time Olympic gold medalist

3          Change! Do something different

Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change. Jim Rohn

Old ways don’t open new doors. One day or Day One. You decide.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi

4          Fail Forward

Fail forward!! Whenever you undertake a new project, attempt to make as many mistakes as rapidly as possible in order to learn as much as you can in the shortest period of time. Mistakes are great. Learn from them; research them; use them to propel you forward.

If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
Thomas Edison

5          Break the activity down into small steps

If you’re feeling intimidated or overwhelmed by a challenge, don’t do it all at once. You can make it a multi-step process that will let you slowly climb that mountain.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs. Henry Ford

6          Ask great questions

Quality questions create a quality life.  Tony Robbins

What is the worst that could happen?  Could I survive it?  What is the best that could happen?  Would others or I benefit from it?   What is holding me back?  What is the first step I need to take? Do it!   Winning starts with beginning.

You mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer. William S Burroughs

7          Look forward not backwards

I skate where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.
Wayne Gretzy

Get rid of the old postcards on the fridge door and replace them with pictures of your dreams, where you want to go, and what you want to create or be.

Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer. Dennis Waitey

8          Visualize your success

Visualize your future because that’s where you are going to spend the rest of your life.
Mark Twain

Make pictures in your mind of what your life will look like when you have reached those goals. Dream in perfect detail. It is the secret of all great champions and leaders.
Ann Quinn

9          Think like a Winner

Become more aware of your thoughts. Are they bringing you down or building you up? As I say to my clients, there is no such word, as “I can’t.”  Winners find a way and they do it! They don’t make excuses. They make things happen. They make commitments and they keep them. Believing is what separates the champions from those who want to be champions. It must be a conviction, something so strong that no one can shake it no matter what setbacks and losses you have.  Even the Bible teaches us in Mark 9.23

Everything is possible for him who believes.

10       Demand more of you

Struggling and suffering are the essence of a life worth living. If you’re not pushing yourself beyond the comfort zone, if you’re not demanding more from yourself – expanding and learning as you go – you’re choosing a numb existence. You’re denying yourself an extraordinary trip.
Dean Kamazes, Ultra marathon runner

True self-discovery begins where your comfort zone ends.
