Use It or Lose It!

WEEK 2 AUGUST 2011

Following on from the brain boosters last week, here are some more great brain tips! Our brain is like our body. It needs exercise in order to keep fit too.

Keeping your Brain Fit

1  Engage in mental workouts like quick calculations or learning a new language to keep your mind sharp.

2  Cardiovascular exercises such as brisk walking, jogging and swimming are ideal for keeping the brain oxidised.

3  A good night’s sleep does wonders for keeping brain activity fresh during the waking hours.4  There’s nothing like love in your life to maintain a healthy brain. Love what you do, love who you’re with, and most of all, love yourself. Positive, loving energy goes a long way in keeping the brain young and active.

5  Stay hydrated. When you are thirsty, it’s too late. Like our bodies, the brain needs plenty of water. When dehydrated, the level of energy generated in the brain decreases. Drink up! Little and often.

6  Do something new! Challenging your brain by performing new and novel tasks will force the brain to adapt by growing more connections (called dendrites), which allow neurons to communicate easier with one another. Activities such as using your non-dominant hand to brush your teeth, taking a different route to work, or taking up a new hobby are simple ways to keep your brain fit and healthy.

And a quote too!

Experience is food for the brain.
