Top Athletes Get Their Priorities In Order

In today’s blog post, we move onto Step 4 in our goal setting process and learn the importance of deciding what is most important and then scheduling actions for each of your priorities to make it happen.

Step 4: Prioritise

  • Number each goal from 1 to 5 in order of priority
  • Decide what is most important NOW!
  • Schedule your actions

Number each goal from 1 to 5 in order of priority

Because of the detailed analysis we did in Chapter 1, you will have lots of goals to achieve. Remember, it is a 10 year journey! Now beside every goal, I want you to number them from one to five, one being of the utmost importance and five being a more longer term priority. For example, increasing your endurance base so you can complete a marathon in under three hours might be a longer term goal and priority whereas completing your injury prevention exercises every day is a number one priority.

Decide what is most important NOW!

The next step in the process is to decide which of those goals are most important right now. What are your absolute priorities? Go through each of your number one priorities and choose the top five goals you must achieve in the next three months. If you do not have five, then go to the number two priorities and if you have more than five, I want you to choose the top five amongst those. Add these into the goal sheet at the end of the chapter.

Schedule Your Actions

If you can dream it, it is possible
If you plan it, it is a goal
If you schedule it, it is reality
Put it in your diary NOW!

The final most important step of all is to schedule it. Sounds simple and it is! Take all your actions for each of your top 5 goals, and one by one, schedule them into your training week and block off the time you will need to achieve that action. Go to it and fill in your diary with appointments not only for training commitments but most importantly of all, for you!
