With CoVid numbers continuing to increase around the world it is especially important you take great care of you and protect your immune system too. Whilst no foods, supplements or lifestyle modification other than physical distancing and good hygiene, will  prevent disease,  eating healthy foods to boost your immune function is just one way to keep it strong.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Here are some suggestions.

Citrus Fruits – are full of vitamin C which increases your production of white blood cells which are key to fighting infections. Eg-g rapefruit, oranges, lemons, lime, mandarins, etc

Red Peppersare also a great source of Vitamin C too (it has three times the Vitamin C of an orange)

Broccoli is super charged with vitamins and minerals and lots of antioxidants too. It has lots of Vitamins A, C and E as well as many other antioxidants.

Garlic – great for its immune boosting due to lots of sulphur containing compounds.

Spinach, Kale and Silverbeet– Rich in Vitamin C and folate, a naturally occurring B vitamin, important for healthy cell function. Also packed with antioxidants.

Colourful fruits and vegetables such as berries and carrots have antioxidants that protect you against oxidative stress, which translates to a stronger immune system.

Almonds – a great source of Vitamin E and healthy fats.

Sunflower Seeds are incredibly high in selenium and are full of nutrients including phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin B6 and E.

Mushrooms – varieties such as shiitake, maitake and reishi are packed with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins B, C & D and bioactive compounds called beta-glucans, known to support immune defence.

Green Tea is packed with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant and is an excellent source of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), another powerful antioxidant. It is also a good source of L-theanine which aids in the production of germ fighting compounds in your T cells.

Probiotics – are great to help prevent microbes, bacteria, and viruses from being able to infiltrate your immune system. Examples include yogurt (with live/active cultures), kombucha, aged cheeses, miso soup, etc)

Of course, it goes without sayingregular exercise is a pillar of healthy living. Apart from helping to protect you against a variety of diseases, it lowers blood press, helps control your weight and improves cardiovascular health.  Likewise, adequate sleep, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, having alcohol only in moderation, minimising stress and staying hydratedare also keys to a healthy immune system.
