Wimbledon Inspiration

JULY 2020

It is that Wimbledon time of year and for the first time in over 30 years, I am at home! I have so many treasured memories of the tournament from staying up with my Dad in front of the open fire and watching matches to the early hours of the morning, but the best of all was when Pat Cash won and climbed up to give us a hug in the player’s box afterwards. Here are a few words of wisdom from a some past Wimbledon winners.

DREAM DAILY
Every time I hit the ball I would pretend I was on that magical court at Wimbledon. And then every time I went to sleep at night I would dream about playing at Wimbledon one day.
Evonne Goolagong Cawley – Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion, 1971 and 1980
.
KEEP WORKING HARD EVERY DAY
Luck has nothing to do with it, because I have spent many, many hours, countless hours, on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it would come.
Serena Williams, Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion – 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016
.
BE MOTIVATED BY YOUR DOUBTS
All winners dream their dreams but they too have doubts and worries like we all do. The difference is they do not hold onto them and use them to motivate themselves to greater heights. This is a quote from Novak back in 2010.
I was riddled with self doubt before gaining wings.
It is an honour to play in the Wimbledon final – the most watched tennis match in the world.
Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon Men’s Singles Champion, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019
.
NEVER GIVE UP
It took Andy Murray eight attempts to win Wimbledon and it did not feel inevitable at all.
It’s incredibly difficult to win these events. I don’t think that’s well understood sometimes. It takes so much hard work and mental toughness, to win these sort of tournaments.
Andy Murray, Wimbledon Men’s Singles Champion, 2013, 2016
.
THINK POSITIVELY
In the words of the all time great, Roger Federer before playing in his tenth Wimbledon Final
I am a very positive thinker, and I think this is what helps me most in difficult moments.
Roger Federer – Wimbledon Men’s Singles Champion, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007,2009, 2012, 2017
.
ENJOY THE JOURNEY
The moment of victory is too short to live for that alone.
Martina Navratilova, Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion, 1978, 1979, 1982,1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990
.
.
Follow your dreams. Keep working hard and never give up.
And be sure to enjoy the strawberries and cream too!
