QUOTE 13 – JULY 2014
It has been a great few weeks at Wimbledon, even with a few broken bones! As always, there was lots of amazing tennis, a few surprises and upsets and plenty of inspiration too.
“I could have easily lost my concentration in the fifth set and just handed him the win. But I didn’t and that’s why this win has a special importance to me mentally because I managed not just to win against my opponent but win against myself as well, and find that inner strength that got me the trophy today.”
Turning 33 next month and now the father of four, the extraordinary Roger Federer somehow managed to turn Sunday’s Wimbledon final into a marathon. For Federer this was about adding to his 17 major titles and achieving a historic eighth at Wimbledon. He was playing for his legacy. His opponent, Djokovic, summed him up well.
“He’s a magnificent champion, a great example of a great athlete, and a great role model for many kids.”
Interviewed after her stunning second Wimbledon crown, Petra Kvitova talked about the importance of a great coach.
“I had great tactics from my coach – he always knows how I need to play. After three years to be back here with the trophy is so special.”
It has been a great year for Eugenie Bouchard having reached the semi-finals in Melbourne and Paris and now the Wimbledon Final.
“I will never be satisfied,’ says Bouchard, ‘I want to play in many more Grand Slam finals. I’m going to go back, work on my game, try to get better, because you always need to get better.”
“Obviously 14 Slams between us,” said Kyrgios, “so it’s going to be a good match.” (All 14 of course, won by Nadal).“I just believed in myself, that I could create some opportunities. I took them under pressure today.”
“I want to be the No. 1 player in the world.”Beating the No. 1 player in the world at Wimbledon is not a bad way to start fulfilling that wish.
Find your own inner strength as Djokovic did; be a great role model like Federer to all those around you; get a good coach to guide you to your greatness as Petra has done, and keep trying to always get better as Eugenie is doing; and never stop believing in yourself as we learned from Kyrigos.
