AUGUST 2021
It has been a fabulous month with the Olympics and now the Paralympics and certainly made our lock downs more inspiring. Even if you are not into sport, here are some great lessons we can all learn from some of the Tokyo 2020 Olympians.

CONFIDENCE
“Confidence does not come naturally to me. If I train and I hit repetitions that is when I form it. Until then, I fake it to I make it.” Simone Biles, USA – Winner of 7 Olympic medals and considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.

I AM ME
“I am not defined by being an Olympic bronze medalist, or a world champion, or the high schooler that went pro,” he said. “That’s not who I am. I’m Noah Lyles. I’m not Usain Bolt’s successor. I’m not Andre de Grasse’s successor. I’m nobody’s successor. I am me. And that’s who I’ll always be.” Noah Lyles, USA – Bronze Medalist, 200 m track

SET REALLY HIGH GOALS
“I would encourage you to set really high goals. Set goals that, when you set them, you think they’re impossible. But then every day you can work towards them, and anything is possible, so keep working hard and follow your dreams.”Katie Ledecky, USA – Gold Medalist – 1500m freestyleÂ

BEAUTIFUL AND STRONG
“We can be beautiful and strong.” Hidilyn Diaz, Philippines, Gold Medalist, Women’s 55kg Weightlifting

BEHIND EVERY GREAT ATHLETE IS A GREAT COACH AND TEAM
Behind every great champion is always a great coach and team that devote their lives to helping their athletes succeed. Years of hard work, dedication, commitment, early mornings, long days, never ending learning, battles through injuries, personal and family sacrifices, etc go into making a champion.“I bleed with my athletes.” Dean Boxall, coach of dual gold medalist swimmer, Ariarne Titmus “He means everything to me,” she said. “I simply could not have beaten Katie Ledecky without him. We didn’t discuss what I wanted to do in the pool. It was more of a have fun moment. We practised this for so long. I just knew what I had to do when I got out there.” Ariarne Titmus, Australia – Gold medalist 200m and 400m freestyle

.
KEEP GOING AND KEEP FIGHTING You just gotta keep going and fighting for everything, and one day you’ll get to where you want.” Naomi Osaka, Japan – Tennis player who made an early exit in the Women’s singles in Tokyo. She has won 4 Grand Slams and is a former World Number 1 and had the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron during the Opening Ceremony.

THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO WORK ON
” I was evaluating myself, and I thought I still had room to work. “Writing on a T-shirt is another process of my athletics process. I wrote every time I jumped the bar, which allowed me to go off the zone,” What do I need to work on? ”After I cleared 2m, I was dying to retreat, so instead of being absorbed in emotions. I just kept going back and forth because I knew there was something to work on.” Nicola McDermott, Australia – Silver Medalist High Jump

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH IS WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT
“My mental and physical health is better than any medal. When you take care of you and honour what you are really feeling, it is then you succeed.”
“The outpouring of love and support I’ve received has made me realise, I am more than my accomplishments and gymnastics, which I never truly believed before.”
Simone Biles, Bronze Medalist – Gymnastics Beam, 2021. She has also won a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals.
She called her bronze beam medal her most meaningful one, as she felt it symbolized her focus on mental health and her perseverance.

ALWAYS CELEBRATE HOW FAR YOU HAVE COME
From fleeing war torn Sudan, to Egypt and moving to Australia in 2004, to being the fastest ever Australian over 800 m and finishing 4th in the Olympics. He gave it everything and he inspired the nation. An athlete always feels disappointed in the heat of the moment when they did not get the gold butit is so important to stop and reflect on how far you have come and all you have achieved. Be sure to celebrate all your little wins along the path. Little by little, little wins becomeBIG wins. Celebrate the journey. Peter Bol – Australia , finished 4th in the 800m
